Maths – Tuesday 12th May

Mental maths –  Try and do these in your head.
3+ 6+ 7=
14 - 9 =
16 + 6 =
12 + 5+ 8=
25 -6 =
49 - 9 =
12 X 3 =
25 ÷ 5 =

Addition
Look at this example for 379 + 5

The 5 has been partitioned in to 4 and 1.
The 1 then can be added to 379 to make a number that is a multiple of 10. (380)
Then the 4 can be easily added to 380 to make 384.

Use this method to do the following calculations: Please show how you partitioned the number to help you.

1.      324 + 9 =
2.      415 + 6 =
3.      675 + 8 =
4.      219 + 6 =
5.      567 + 7 =
6.      805 + 9 =
7.  708 + 5 =
8.     999 + 4 =

In this example the number 7 has been partitioned into 4 and 3.
When you add 4 to 46 it will make a multiple of 10 (50).
Then you add the 3 to the 50 to make 53.
Finally the hundreds number is then added.

Now use a number line to help you complete the following calculations.  Draw number lines to show how you worked them out.

1.      675 + 6 =

2.      348 + 5 =
3.      421 + 9 =
4.      313 + 8 =
5.      489 + 7=
6.      588 + 4 =
7.      109 + 8 =
8.      867 + 4 =
